Though they are small, these modules are quite bright, and the referenced microcontroller library makes it straightforward to get them working with an Arduino. That said, they won't put out quite as much light as a larger, dedicated LED, so consider using them in conjunction with something like white 5mm LEDs or even the 3W LEDs if you are looking to use these for illumination. Also, be prepared to spend a fair amount of time at the soldering station if you want to build a string of these modules, as each board requires connections to 5v, ground, and a signal wire in order to function.
On the whole, these things are a blast to play around with!
