RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification, is a system for transferring data over short distances
Often only one of the two devices needs to be powered, while the other is a passive device, as no power source is required for radio data transmission
Ideal for use in such things as credit cards, key fobs, and pet collars, because there is no need for battery power
Can read at distances of 5cm (1.97in) for cards, 3cm (1.2in) for fobs
- The size and tuning of the antenna and the power supply voltage have a significant impact on the achievable operating distance, therefore two of the same RFID card/fob may not have exactly similar read/write ranges due to slight differences in their internal antenna windings
- Orientation of a tag (card/fob) in relation to the RC522 module's antenna as well as nearby metal objects/wires can also have a significant impact on operating distances
